How to Prevent Cheating in Online Interviews

Published by Eagle Vision

Remote hiring made interviews easier to schedule and easier to game. Candidates can read answers from a second screen, paste from an AI assistant or take prompts from someone off camera. You cannot stop every attempt, but you can make cheating hard, visible and provable.

The common ways candidates cheat remotely

Knowing the methods tells you which controls matter. Most cases fall into a few groups.

Lock the session down

A fullscreen requirement is the simplest strong control. When the interview runs in fullscreen, stepping out of it is an event you can see rather than something you have to guess at. Combine it with detection of tab switches and pasting, so that every departure is counted and timestamped.

Do not rely on the candidate promising to behave. Controls that record what happened remove the argument later.

Watch and record the whole session

Video of the candidate and a recording of their screen give you evidence to review after the interview. A recording also changes behaviour. Candidates who know the session is recorded are less likely to try anything.

Review flagged moments rather than watching hours of video. A good platform marks the time of each flag so you can jump straight to it.

Design questions that are hard to outsource

Tools help, but the interview itself matters just as much.

Be open with candidates

Tell candidates before the interview what is monitored and why. Clear rules reduce disputes, and honest candidates appreciate a fair process. Link to your privacy policy so they know how recordings are handled.
